Fewer than 25 people needs no permit; 25 or more needs one, with no assembly fee
The Seashore's special activities page says groups of fewer than 25 may exercise First Amendment rights without a permit, and that larger assemblies need a permit but pay no fee. That rule is written for expressive gatherings. Weddings are listed separately as a permit category. Whether a ceremony of fewer than 25 people falls under the no permit provision is a question we could not settle from the pages, so ask the District Ranger before you assume.
Two things are clear either way. Nothing may be sold on site and no admission may be charged. Entry is by prior invitation only. A cash bar is out, and so is a ticketed reception, under those terms.
Applications go by U.S. Mail only, and the fee amounts are not published
Fax and email applications are not accepted. The special use permit policy describes a non refundable application fee, and says administrative, location and cost recovery fees may apply on top. The specific dollar amounts are not published on the pages we read. So two statements sit side by side: no fee for the assembly under the special activities page, and an application fee under the policy page. Call headquarters at 631-515-5557 and ask for the current figures before mailing anything.
The sponsor bears all costs of setup, cleanup, policing and damage. If a ranger has to be on site, that is a cost recovery item. Carry it in the budget as an unknown until the park quotes it.
Mail takes time, and the park's processing time is not published either. Add the one week ranger meeting to whatever the mail and review take. Then add the 24 hour wait on a New York marriage license, which cannot be used until a full day after the exact time it is issued. The calendar for a Fire Island ceremony starts earlier than most couples expect.
Lifeguarded beaches, the first stretch at Smith Point and two Watch Hill picnic areas are off limits
The Seashore names the places where a permitted event cannot go.
- Any lifeguarded beach.
- The beach from Smith Point to the first dune crossing.
- The east and south picnic areas at Watch Hill.
- The wilderness zone, which is for camping only.
- That leaves shoreline, but not the parts most visitors picture. Ask the ranger to walk you to a specific spot and to confirm it in the permit.
A ranger meeting at least one week ahead is required, and one named person must attend
Prior coordination with the District Ranger is a condition of the permit. The meeting has to happen at least one week before the event, and one named designee has to be there. Make that person the planner or the most organized member of the family, because they become the park's point of contact.
Inside historic buildings the rules tighten: no loud noises, no music and no dancing. A reservation of a historic property needs a ranger on site for its duration. If the ceremony is on the sand and the party is in a historic structure, plan for two rule sets in one afternoon.
No marketplace lists a Fire Island community, so the search starts at park headquarters
The Knot's Long Island region listed 207 venues on 3 September 2026, a marketplace count. Its location filter includes no Fire Island community. WeddingWire's location filter does not include one either. A search by location on either platform returns nothing for Fire Island, which is why couples end up reading federal permit pages instead of venue listings.
The Seashore's rules cover federal land. Parts of Fire Island are not federal land, and a house or hall in one of the island's communities may sit under a different authority. If a venue on the island tells you the park rules do not apply, ask which rules do, and confirm with headquarters that the spot is outside the Seashore's jurisdiction.
Getting there is on you. The permit pages say nothing about ferries, and neither does our research, so ask the ranger how guests, vendors and gear reach the site and what the park allows on the sand.
