The fee is $40 and it includes the registration certificate
Outside New York City the marriage license fee is $40, according to the Town of Southampton Clerk. The Certificate of Marriage Registration, the document you will need later for a name change or an insurance form, is included in that price.
We read the Southampton page because it is the clearest first party statement we found. The page describes the figure as the fee outside New York City, so expect the same at other Long Island clerks, and confirm it when you call.
For scale, the license is the smallest line in the whole budget. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the national average officiant cost at $260, and the license is $40. Nassau and Suffolk together recorded 13,756 marriages in 2023, according to the state Department of Health's provisional Table 47a, so the clerks have done this before. The paperwork is the easy part, provided the timing is right.
The 24 hour clock starts at the exact time of issuance
The ceremony may not take place until 24 hours after the exact time the license was issued. Not the next calendar day: the exact time. A license issued in the afternoon does not support a ceremony earlier the following afternoon.
The practical answer is to get the license the week before, or earlier, inside the 60 day window. Ask the clerk to note the time of issuance on your receipt, and keep the receipt with the license.
Sixty days of validity, counted from the day after issuance
The license is valid for 60 days, and the count begins the day after it is issued. That sets both ends of the window. Apply too early and the license lapses before the date. Apply too late and the 24 hour rule bites. Between the two there is a wide margin, and a clerk will tell you the last valid date on the spot if you ask. Write it on the envelope.

The 60 day window also shapes the order of your errands. Book the officiant and the venue first; Zola's First Look 2026 survey puts the average engagement at 18 months, and the license fits nowhere in that span except the end. Then, once the date is fixed, go to the clerk inside the final 60 days and outside the final 24 hours. Two dates, one trip.
Both of you, in person, and no one can stand in
Both parties must appear in person at the clerk's office. A representative cannot apply on the couple's behalf. A parent, a planner or an attorney cannot do it either.
If one of you lives out of state or is deployed, the in person rule still applies as written on the Southampton page, and the clerk is the person to ask about the options.
What to bring is not listed on the page we read. Identification and any prior divorce or death records are the usual questions, and the clerk's office will tell you which documents it accepts.
Three things the Southampton page does not publish
We say not published rather than guess.
- Residency requirements: not published on the Southampton Clerk's page. Ask the clerk whether either of you must live in the town, the county or the state to apply there.
- Appointment requirements: not published. Ask whether the office takes walk ins and what its hours are for license issuance.
- Ceremony fees: not published. If the clerk or a judge will perform the ceremony, ask what that costs and how far ahead it is booked.
- Every town in Nassau and Suffolk has a clerk; the Southampton page is the one we read in full. Call the clerk in the town where you plan to apply, ask the same questions, then ask for the answers in an email.
Officiants: 58 listed on The Knot for Long Island, and a national average of $260
The Knot's Long Island region listed 58 officiants on 3 September 2026, and WeddingWire showed 61. Both are marketplace counts. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, drawn from 10,474 couples married in 2025, puts the national average officiant cost at $260. Zola's page dated 6 March 2026 puts it at $325. The Wedding Report's 2026 Long Island estimate, at 75 guests, puts the officiant at $313 to $383. Three marketplace sources, three figures. Only The Wedding Report's is labeled Long Island, and it is an estimate built from reported spending rather than a rate card.
Who may legally perform a marriage in New York, and what the officiant files after the ceremony, are not in our research. The town clerk who issues the license can tell you what the state accepts. Your officiant should be able to say, before you pay, how they are registered and where they return the signed license.
