This is the fancy end of the Island, and it earns it. The Ram's Head Inn sits on Shelter Island, which isn't technically the Hamptons and will tell you so, but it's a short ferry from Sag Harbor and it books like one. A lot of the rest is private estates and tented weddings in a backyard that happens to face the dunes. Gurney's and everything past Amagansett belongs to Montauk, which is its own animal and gets its own page.
Two honest things before you fall for it. It has the priciest zip codes going, and on summer Fridays, Route 27 is a parking lot that everyone plans their arrival around. Book the room block, tell your people to leave early, and take a real look at a Friday. A Hamptons wedding in September, after the crowds clear out, is the date the locals actually book.
Half the Hamptons weddings you've seen in magazines happened on private property under a tent, and that route comes with homework. Big guest counts can trigger gathering permits depending on the town or village, the noise rules shut the band down early and the neighbors know the number to call, and everything a venue would own, from the generators to the restroom trailers to where forty vendors park, lands on your plan instead. Also budget for the surcharge nobody mentions: plenty of vendors charge travel fees east of the Shinnecock Canal, so ask every single one up front.
The premium out there is land, a compressed season, and staff who have to be housed for it. You can duck a lot of it without leaving the South Fork. A restaurant buyout in Sag Harbor or Amagansett gets you the address and dinner worth bragging about at a fraction of the estate math. The inns marry smaller parties beautifully. And a Friday does to a Hamptons quote what it does everywhere else on the Island, except the starting number was bigger, so the discount is too. The ocean doesn't know what day it is.
