The Ram's Head Inn

You cannot drive to this one. Every guest coming from Sag Harbor pays South Ferry: $18 one way, $25 for a same-day round trip, cash on the boat. Everyone coming from Greenport pays North Ferry $16 for car and driver. Put that in the invitation, not in a group text at four o’clock on the day. What it buys is 4.5 acres on Coecles Harbor and a 1919 inn with thirteen rooms over the restaurant.

Why the ferry matters, in dollars and in last boats

There are two ways onto Shelter Island and both of them float. South Ferry runs from North Haven, just past Sag Harbor, and publishes $18 one way and $25 round trip, cash only on board, with round trips to be completed the same day. North Ferry runs from Greenport and publishes $16 one way for vehicle and driver, $26 for a same-day return, and $3 for each additional passenger each way up to two. It also publishes $3 a head for foot passengers and $4 for a bicycle and rider. Neither one takes a reservation.

The last boat is the real constraint, and it is not the same boat every night. South Ferry’s published schedule puts the final North Haven departure at 11:50 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 1:50 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with the last run off the island at 11:45 p.m. and 1:45 a.m. North Ferry lists its last boat from Greenport at midnight every night, pushed to 1:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Leaving the island it is 11:45 p.m., pushed to 12:45 a.m. on those same summer Friday and Saturday nights. A reception that breaks at eleven on a Sunday in October is a different problem from the same reception in July.

Frequency takes some of the edge off. South Ferry publishes departures every 10 to 15 minutes, first come first served, with a first boat off the island at 5:20 a.m. The queue on a July Saturday is still a queue. And neither landing is the venue, the inn sits at 108 Ram Island Drive, out on the eastern side of the island, so there is driving on both ends of the crossing. Ferry fares are a per-car line item nobody remembers to add to the rest of their East End math.

1919, and the long weekend in 1947

The inn’s own Our Story page says it was “built in 1919 by a pioneering woman” whom it does not name. Real-estate coverage of the property dates the building to 1929. We cannot reconcile those, so we are printing both rather than picking the prettier one.

What is not in dispute is June 2 to 4, 1947. Twenty-four physicists met at the Ram’s Head for the first Shelter Island Conference on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, among them Oppenheimer, Feynman, Bethe, Rabi, Lamb and Schwinger. Willis Lamb presented the shift that carries his name. Oppenheimer later called it the most successful scientific meeting he ever attended. The whole conference cost $850. Nobody at your cocktail hour knows this. Tell them.

Who owns it now, and what the numbers did

Linda and James Eklund ran the inn for 41 years and sold it to Aandrea Carter, a real-estate investor and president of The Carter Group. Dan’s Papers reports the price at $7.95 million, the closing on March 18, 2021, and a reopening twelve days later. It was her first hotel or restaurant. Executive chef Joe Smith, a Shelter Island native, stayed on through the change. The inn now trades year-round rather than seasonally, and a guest review on the site refers to renovations completed “last fall,” which we could not pin to a year from the inn itself.

The room count moved with the sale, which matters if you are planning a block. Behind The Hedges’ coverage of the sale describes a 22-room hotel on 4.3 acres with 800 feet of frontage on Coecles Harbor and eight moorings. The inn’s current site describes 4.5 landscaped acres, a private beach with moorings, and 13 rooms. Fewer and larger rooms after a gut renovation is the ordinary explanation. Either way, do not plan on twenty-two keys.

What the inn will not put in writing

No capacity. No site fee. No food-and-beverage minimum. No buyout price. No published end time. For a property this well known that is unusual, and it means every figure you get will have been quoted to you specifically, for your date.

Two restaurant seat counts drift through the sale coverage: a 110-seat restaurant in one account, a 180-seat dining room in another. Neither is a wedding capacity and neither should be used as one. When you call, get four things in writing. The maximum seated on the lawn under a tent and inside without one. Whether the thirteen rooms come with a buyout or are booked separately. What time amplified music has to stop. And what the rain plan actually is. On an island, the rain plan is the plan.
