You get manicured grounds for the photos, usually one event on the books at a time, and a kitchen that has been feeding members for years. The Muttontown Club, Stonebridge in Smithtown, and the Hamlet clubs mid-island run weddings right alongside the golf. Crest Hollow has the name and the grounds, but it's a catering venue, not a golf club, so it belongs on the halls list.
The catch is access, so settle it first. The Hamlet clubs and Stonebridge will book outside events, the old-line private clubs like Muttontown usually want a member to sponsor you, and a few only marry off their own membership. On the first call, ask flat out whether you need a connection, what the guest-count range is, and whether non-members pay a premium. Clubs usually top out lower than the big halls, in the low hundreds, which is the whole point if you want green grass and a real clubhouse and not a room built for 400.
Play continues on your wedding day, so the famous fairway photos get scheduled with the pro shop, not improvised. Ask for the golf cart run at dusk, it's the shot every club couple frames. Check whether the clubhouse keeps a dress code for guests, because some still do and Uncle Richie in shorts finding out at the door is a story you don't want. In October, when the trees along the fairways turn, a club wedding gets scenery the ballrooms pay florists to fake.
On value: clubs live off member play and midweek outings, so the wedding calendar has soft dates the big halls never offer, and the kitchen that feeds the membership all year isn't going to embarrass itself on your night.
