Wind Watch Golf & Country Club

Open to the public, and the club says so on its about page

Wind Watch is owned by Invited, Inc., the operator formerly called ClubCorp, and its about page describes a semi private Hauppauge club open to the general public and running on daily fee golf. It also states that the club provides professional catering for private functions. We read the club page, the about page and the weddings page, and found no membership requirement attached to weddings on any of them.

That puts Wind Watch in a small group on this list. Several clubs in this batch need a member. This one publishes the opposite in plain language, which is a sentence you can quote back on the phone if anyone hesitates.

The property sits on one of the highest points on Long Island with views north, which is what the marketplace listings lead with. It is also worth checking at the hour your ceremony starts rather than at noon on a tour.

One caveat on the ownership. Invited runs a large portfolio and its club pages follow a house template, so the same weddings copy appears at several properties. The claims that count here, semi private, open to the general public, and one affair at a time, sit on the Hauppauge pages, and they are worth confirming as current for this club rather than inherited from a template.

One affair at a time is the club's own claim, and it is the good one

The club's weddings page states that it runs only one affair at a time. That is first party, and it is the most valuable thing the club publishes, because it is the difference between a Saturday that belongs to you and a Saturday you share with a communion in the next room.

Note what it does not say. It does not name the rooms it counts. It does not say how the golf operation runs alongside a wedding. It does not say whether the Seasons restaurant and lounge stays open to daily fee golfers while your cocktail hour happens beside it, and a daily fee course has golfers on it all day by definition.

So the useful follow up is narrow. On my date, who else is on this property, and where are they standing. The answer is not inside the exclusivity claim.

Three price sources, three different shapes of number

Eventective lists $50 to $160 per person for events, stated for parties of 40 to 250. WeddingWire lists a $9,100 starting price, which is a package total rather than a per person rate, and lists bar service starting at $18 per person. The club's own site publishes nothing and directs couples to its event sales director for a custom estimate.

These do not reconcile and we are not going to make them. A per person range, a package floor and a bar rate measure three different things, and none of the three came from the club.

WeddingWire's listed inclusions for that starting price are worth reading: bridal suite, chairs, china, clean up, event planning, flatware, glassware, linens, parking, set up and tables. That is a broad list, which is normal for a club that caters in house, and it says nothing about food, which is where the money actually goes.

Colonie Hill, Joe Lee, Stephen Kay, and a sale to ClubCorp

The course opened in 1971 as Colonie Hill Golf Club. Joe Lee redesigned it in 1990. Stephen Kay redesigned it again in 1997. The property operated for years as the Hamlet Wind Watch, a name plenty of Long Islanders still use, and ClubCorp, now Invited, acquired it in 2011.

That history is worth carrying into the conversation for one reason. An old name attached to an address confuses vendors, guests and car services. If your invitation says Wind Watch and your grandmother's neighbour still calls it the Hamlet, put the street address on the direction card. It is 1715 Motor Parkway.

The rooms, per Eventective, are a ballroom, a Terrace banquet room and the Seasons restaurant and lounge. The ballroom is described on marketplace listings as having an arched glass ceiling and floor to ceiling windows over the course, with an outdoor ceremony area reached by a stone walkway. The club publishes no per room capacity.

The ceremony fee moves with the month

WeddingWire prices the ceremony site fee at $750 in peak season and $400 off peak, and it defines the seasons unusually. Peak there is April, May, June, August, September, October and November. Off peak is January, February, March and July. July sitting in the cheap column is not a typo on our side, and if a July date suits you, the ceremony line drops from $750 to $400.

The same listing shows a reception site fee of $1, which reads as a placeholder someone forgot to fill in. We do not treat it as a price.

Nothing else is published. No food and beverage minimum, no guest minimum, no service charge, no maitre d' or attendant fee, no end time, no rain plan. The ballroom has a glass ceiling and the outdoor ceremony area has none, and no document says what happens when it rains at four o'clock.
