The Mansion at Timber Point

Suffolk County owns this golf course. Lessing’s runs the room inside the clubhouse, and the clubhouse is a mansion that predates the club by decades. Public land, a private caterer, 1920s championship golf architecture, and the Great South Bay out the window. That combination is rare enough on Long Island to be worth understanding before you tour.

Colt, Alison, 1927, and the nine that came later

The Timber Point Club was chartered in the spring of 1925 by Horace Havemeyer, Buell Hollister and W. Kingsland Macy, on a 231-acre property that had belonged to William L. Breese and then to the attorney Julien T. Davies. The golf course came from the British firm of H. S. Colt and C. H. Alison, with Alison himself running the North American work, and the original eighteen opened in 1927. The course was, by design, kept to no more than a hundred players at a time.

The club did not survive the middle of the century as a private concern. One golf history of the property places the county’s acquisition in the early 1970s and dates the third nine, the White course by architect William Mitchell, to 1973. That is where the 27 holes come from: Red, Blue and White, three loops rather than a course and a half.

The mansion you would hold a reception in is the Davies-era house, not a purpose-built ballroom bolted onto a golf club. That is the entire difference between this room and the other water-view halls on the South Shore.

What Lessing’s puts in writing, and what it doesn’t

The venue’s own site gives 250 seated and 350 for a cocktail reception, and a $2,000 deposit. Three rules on their private events page matter more than any of that: in-house catering is required, in-house liquor is required, and they run a maximum of one event at a time. That last one is the sentence to underline. Plenty of Long Island rooms will cheerfully run your wedding alongside somebody else’s sweet sixteen.

Package names are published. Prices are not. Foundations, Elegance, Grand Affair and Ultimate Diamond appear on their packages page with one-line descriptions and no figures attached. Eventective, an aggregator, lists a $10,995 to $13,995 range for the Complete Wedding Package and a $1,700 micro-wedding option. We have not seen either number on anything from Lessing’s, and we are not going to treat an aggregator as a price sheet. Ask for the per-head rate, the minimum guest count, and whether there is a facility or administrative fee on top. That last question is the one that moves a Long Island total the most.

The site does not publish room names for the interior spaces, only a “separate reception room” and the outdoor areas, so ask which room is which on the tour and write it down.

The water is the bay, not the ocean

This is the Great South Bay, sheltered water where the Connetquot River comes in, and it behaves differently from a Sound-side or an ocean venue. Less wind, flatter light off the water, and the far horizon is Fire Island rather than open Atlantic. Suffolk County’s own golf page nominates the fifth on the Blue, a 207-yard par three they call “Gibraltar,” as the spot where the river meets the bay.

Address is 398 Great River Road, and Great River is quiet in a way that surprises people who only know the Islip stretch of Sunrise Highway. Nothing here is walkable to a hotel. Build the transport plan early. If you are weighing this against other waterfront venues, the question is not which has water; it is which water.
