Cradle of Aviation Museum

There is one caterer here and there is no version of this where there are two. Philip Stone Caterers is exclusive at the Cradle of Aviation, which the museum states flatly on every event page, and that one line shapes more of your wedding than the aircraft hanging over the atrium do. The upside: this museum publishes room-by-room capacities, which is more than most Nassau ballrooms manage.

Every room, and the number the museum prints next to it

Straight off the museum’s party spaces page. The Atrium: up to 1,500 for cocktails, 1,000-plus for dinner and dancing, under a four-story glass ceiling with real aircraft suspended in it. Red Planet Cafe: up to 250 seated. The Space Gallery: 100 seated for dinner, 200 for a cocktail reception. Hangar Two: up to 200 cocktail, 90 seated. Lunar Landing: up to 30 diners. The exhibit galleries: up to 250 each for cocktails, up to 2,000 combined. Outdoor areas come with electricity and restrooms.

The rental landing page separately advertises “from 10 to 10,000 guests,” which is a brochure number and not a room. Use the list. Our fact table carries “Atrium 1,000+ for dinner” and that holds up against the museum’s own page, which is not something we can say about most capacity figures floating around Long Island.

Philip Stone, and nobody else

The exclusivity is not a preferred-vendor list you can buy your way off. If the caterer you have fallen for is not Philip Stone, this is not your venue, and that is not a criticism of either party. It is the deal. Facility rental runs through 516-572-4018; Philip Stone answers at 516-572-4063.

Neither the museum nor the caterer publishes a facility rental fee, a food-and-beverage minimum, or a per-head range anywhere on the site. Two phone numbers is the entire pricing page. Ask for the museum rental fee and the caterer’s minimum as two separate figures, because at a museum they generally are, and a quote that blends them hides which one is negotiable.

The hours are public. The curfew is not.

The museum is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with general admission listed at $18 for adults and $16 for children 2 to 12 and seniors 62 and over. Your private event has to fit around a working public building, and that is the single biggest scheduling difference between this and a catering hall on Jericho Turnpike.

The museum does not publish an event start time, a load-in window, or a hard end time. It does say on its weddings page that guests can visit the historic and futuristic gallery exhibits during a celebration, which is the reason to book the place. Get the rest in writing: earliest load-in, whether cocktails can begin before the public leaves, and which galleries stay unlocked for your guests. Ask whether that carries a charge, and what time the last vendor truck has to be off the property.

The planetarium is a separate booking

The Dome Theater and planetarium seats 300 and, in the museum’s own words, is “available as a supplement to social or corporate celebrations or may be booked independently.” That phrasing means it is priced apart from the room you rent. Whether it makes sense for a wedding depends entirely on your gap between ceremony and dinner, but 300 seats is more than most couples’ entire guest list.

Parking is free, and the hotel is across the lot

Free on-site parking, in the museum’s own lot. The directions page routes you off the Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4, onto Charles Lindbergh Boulevard through Museum Row, second traffic light, right into the lot. The N16 Hempstead, Rockville Center bus stops nearby, and the museum suggests a taxi from the Garden City, Mineola or Westbury LIRR stations.

That same page notes the Long Island Marriott sits directly adjacent to the museum. For a room block in Nassau that is close to ideal, because guests walk. Weigh it against the rest of the unusual rooms on the Island: the parking and the hotel alone move this one up several places.
