Coindre Hall

Coindre Hall is a Suffolk County park. The county bought it in 1972, Suffolk’s own page says 1973, and Lessing’s holds the catering inside a county-owned building, and Lessing’s holds the catering inside a county-owned building. That single arrangement explains the price, the boathouse, and why the answer to about half your questions is going to be no. The lawns really do run down to Huntington Harbor. Understand the structure before you fall for the view.

Who you are actually signing with

You book through Lessing’s, under the trading name Chateau at Coindre Hall, at 101 Browns Road. Their venue page publishes what most operators bury: capacity 250 for dinner and 250 for a reception, a maximum of one affair at a time, a $2,500 minimum deposit, and pricing starting at $99 per person. In-house caterer required. In-house liquor required.

That $99 is a floor, not a quote, and it will not be the number on a June Saturday contract. It is still worth carrying into the meeting, because it is the operator’s own published figure rather than an aggregator’s guess, and because it establishes the bottom of the range you are negotiating inside.

Lessing’s venue page lists the details that decide how a night actually runs, and they are worth reading before the tour. It names a dance floor in a separate room from the dining room, a bridal changing room, a kitchen on the premises and air conditioning. Live music and DJs are both permitted, and valet parking is available for a fee. That last one is a cost, not an inclusion. Ask what it costs per car or per event and whether it is billed to you or to your guests, because at a public park the parking is not exclusively yours to begin with.

The boathouse is not a venue. It is a rescue project.

The boathouse sits low on the water below the lawn, built to match the château. It has been vacant for years. Preservation Long Island named it to the 2023 Endangered Historic Places list, citing the long vacancy and seawall damage from Superstorm Sandy, and noting that funding and community consensus for a full restoration are not there.

The Huntington Historical Society is blunter about it. The Sagamore Rowing Club moved in during 1980 and put $73,000 into safety improvements, and roughly 70 percent of the building was eventually condemned. A 2020 county resolution created an advisory board to work out its future.

Plan on it as scenery. If a vendor suggests the ceremony can happen at the boathouse, or that guests can walk down to it, get that confirmed by Suffolk County Parks rather than by the vendor.

Walk it for free on the last Saturday of the month

This is the part worth acting on. The county page states that Splashes of Hope, a nonprofit with space in the building, offers free public tours of Coindre Hall on the last Saturday of each month beginning at 11:00 am, with group tours by appointment. You can stand inside the hall at no cost, with nobody selling you anything, before you fill in a single inquiry form. Very few Gold Coast estates allow that.

The building is busier than a wedding venue usually is. Alongside Lessing’s, the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, Splashes of Hope and Cornell Cooperative Extension all occupy space there. The Town of Huntington rents the gym and classrooms at Coindre Hall at $60 to $68 an hour depending on the time of year. Your wedding shares a roof with a working public facility. On a Saturday afternoon that is mostly invisible. It is still worth knowing.

1912, 135 acres, and a school that closed

George McKesson Brown made his money in pharmaceuticals, bought 135 waterfront acres facing Huntington Harbor, and hired Clarence Sumner Luce to design what he called West Neck Farm. It was completed in 1912: 40 rooms, about 80,000 square feet. Brown sold the house and 33 acres to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1939, who renamed it for Father André Coindre and ran a boarding school there until it closed in 1971.

Suffolk paid $750,000 in 1972, then shut the building in 1976 over the cost of upkeep. Eagle Hill School leased the property from 1981 and broke the lease in 1989. This house has come close to being lost more than once, which is context worth having when someone tells you it is safe forever.

What the county has already ruled out

When Suffolk set out its restoration plans for the park, the parks commissioner listed what the plans did not include. They left out turning the area into a launch site for party boats, shuttle service to and from Huntington, boat races, and expansion of catering services. That was reported by Huntington Now.

Read the last item carefully. It means the wedding footprint here is fixed at roughly what it is today: one party at a time, 250 people, the ballroom and the piazza. If your list runs to 300, or you want a second tented space out on the lawn, Coindre is not an estate that grows to meet you. Take that conversation to the other Gold Coast houses instead.
