Three Village Inn

Start with the age. The oldest part of the house at 150 Main Street went up in 1751, and the building has since been a shipowner’s summer place, a women’s exchange, a tea room and an inn. Lessing’s runs it today under the Mirabelle name. If you want the kind of wedding weekend where the closest twenty guests sleep upstairs from the party, that is a short list on Long Island and this is on it.

Four lives of one building

The inn’s own history page dates the original structure to 1751 and credits Richard Hallock with building it. In 1835 Jonas Smith, a Stony Brook ship owner, bought it as a summer residence; it changed hands repeatedly after his death in 1867. The turn that made it what it is came in 1929, when Mrs. Frank Melville bought the place and reopened it as a Women’s Exchange and tea room. Through the 1930s the tea room grew into a restaurant with rooms over it, and that is essentially the business model still running.

Context matters here: the Melville family also rebuilt the commercial center up the road. The Stony Brook Village Center was finished in the summer of 1941 and is generally described as the first planned business community in the country. You are not getting married next to a strip of shops that happened to look colonial. Somebody sat down and designed that view.

Twenty-one rooms, and no capacity anywhere in print

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s audio guide to the village describes the inn as offering 21 overnight accommodations between the main house and the cottages, alongside a 250-seat restaurant. That is the closest thing to a hard number anyone publishes about this property.

The inn’s wedding pages name four products — a Complete Wedding Package, a Micro Wedding Package, a Wedding Package and a Cocktail Wedding Reception. They say the Complete and Micro include music, photography, the cake and flowers. They do not publish a per-head rate, a food and beverage minimum, a ceremony fee, or a seated capacity for any room. Their lodging page does publish overnight package rates, from $209 midweek and $275 on weekends, double occupancy, before tax and gratuity. Useful for pricing a room block. Useless for pricing a wedding.

So the first email should be blunt. Ask for the seated capacity of the specific room they are showing you, the minimum guest count, and whether a buyout of the whole inn is required or merely offered. An inn that sleeps 21 and seats 250 in its restaurant can mean several very different weddings.

The Mill Pond is still not fixed

In August 2024 a storm took out the dam at the Stony Brook Mill Pond and washed out Harbor Road with it. If your mental picture of a Stony Brook wedding includes the mill and the pond behind it, check the current state of that spot before you build a photo plan around it. As of a 30 May 2026 funding announcement covered by TBR News Media, $6.5 million in state money and $5 million federal had been committed, with engineering plans expected in July 2026. Committed is not the same as rebuilt.
